The mineral selenium is an essential component of glutathione peroxidase, the most powerful antioxidant enzyme made by the body. Selenium has an especially close biochemical relationship with vitamin E – in fact, although both are needed to sustain life, for certain properties that they each possess, they are considered interchangeable with one another. Terranova’s selenium products feature the organic form selenomethionine, which is enhanced with an intensely synergistic Magnifood complex. Stabilized rice bran, sea buckthorn fruit and acai berries are all highly concentrated sources of plant-derived vitamin E (tocopherols and the more powerful tocotrienol fractions), as well as numerous other water-soluble and fat-soluble antioxidants that complement the functions of selenium. Spirulina contains the antioxidant pigment phycocyanin, which is a water-soluble scavenger of peroxide radicals (vitamin E is a fat-soluble peroxide scavenger).
